Knowing The Types Of Knee Pain With Woodgrove Pines Wellness Clinic

Did you know that the knee is the largest joint in your body? Your knee joints are important and complex. The knee's job is to connect your thigh bone and shin bone, allowing for movement and stability. Unfortunately, knees are prone to many types of problems that can cause you pain.

Here at Woodgrove Pines Wellness Clinic in North Nanaimo, we often see patients with knee pain. Here are some of the most common causes of knee pain, and how your chiropractor can help.

Man with Hurt Knee

Knee Bursitis

Small, fluid-filled sacs called bursae serve as cushions within your knee joint. These bursae can become inflamed due to stress, pressure, or traumatic injury. This causes a condition called bursitis, with symptoms of swelling, warmth, and pain around the knee.

Frozen Knee

Also called "locked knee", this condition occurs when you are unable to move your knee joint at all, or when movement is extremely painful. A frozen knee is often caused by a meniscus tear--a tear in your knee's cartilage. Meniscus tears are common for athletes or as a result of aging. When a meniscus tear happens, you may hear a popping sound, followed by several days of pain and swelling.

Dislocated Knee

Kneecap dislocation occurs when the bone on top of your knee joint slides out of place. This usually happens when suddenly changing direction while walking or due to an injury. A dislocated kneecap causes intense pain, and you may not be able to walk. Some people are prone to dislocating their kneecaps.

Sprains and Strains

Both sprains and strains are common sports injuries, but what's the difference between the two? Knee strain happens when the tendons or muscles of your knees stretch or become torn. Knee sprains happen when your knee's ligaments stretch or tear. Both of these types of injuries cause pain and swelling, and sprains can also cause bruising.

Tendinitis

Tendons are the tissue that attaches muscle to bone. Tendinitis occurs when your tendons become inflamed. Your knee joint is susceptible to a type of tendon inflammation called patellar tendinitis, also called jumper's knee. The most common symptom of this condition is pain and swelling below your kneecap.
