Upper Cervical Pain

Upper Cervical Pain: How Our Chiropractor Can Help

Upper cervical pain refers to pain in the neck that can radiate to other areas of the body, including the shoulders, upper back, and arms. Upper cervical pain can make it difficult to go about your daily activities, and can even make it hard to sleep. At Woodgrove Pines Wellness Clinic in Nanaimo, our chiropractor is here to help you recover naturally from injury and pain in your upper cervical spine.

Causes of Upper Cervical Pain

There are many different causes of upper cervical pain, including:

  • Age. The neck is made up of individual vertebrae, and in between each vertebra is a soft, flexible cushion called a disc. These discs begin to deteriorate as a natural part of the aging process. This can cause bones to rub against each other, which can cause pain.
  • Degenerative disc disease. When the roots of the nerves in the upper cervical spine get pinched due to the deterioration of the spinal discs, it can cause pain in the upper cervical spine.
  • Bulging/ herniated discs. The soft material inside of each disc can shift due to injury or age. This material can cause a bulge or tear in the tough exterior of the disc. When that material pushes on nerves in the neck, it can cause radiating pain.
